ABOUT US
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HAVE YOU ALWAYS LIVED IN THE COUNTRY?
No. Jake grew up in the city, Becky grew up in the country, & we lived in Kansas City for the first 10 years of our marriage.
WHY DID YOU MOVE TO THE COUNTRY?
We were working multiple jobs, commuting all over town to get to work & pick up our son (Eli) from daycare. We had enough. We wanted to live more simply.
WHY DID YOU GET CHICKENS?
Becky always wanted to get chickens again (her family had them when she was a child). So we started with 6 chickens & the rest was history.
WHAT LED YOU TO GROW YOUR OWN FOOD?
We watched the movie, Food Inc, & it gave us new insight into what we were putting into our bodies. We started with one raised bed garden... now we are working on growing a larger garden with a greenhouse in the center.
WHY ARE YOU ON YOUTUBE?
We saw other families (Justin Rhodes, The Grass-fed Homestead) sharing their homestead & family stories through YouTube & we thought we could do it, too! What started out as an experiment has led to a passion for growing our own food, spending time with our family at home & sharing it with our friends online.
Do you work outside of the home?
No, we make videos for our YouTube channel, social media & we sell farm products (honey, hatching eggs, birds). Becky homeschools the kids during the week along with building our farm.
Do you rent or own your place?
The original White House on the Hill was a rental property on a large farm. In 2019, we moved to our own 40 acre farm that we are building from scratch. Watch us develop it on YouTube.
Why emus and exotic birds?
We've always enjoyed hatching birds and after getting comfortable with chickens, ducks and turkeys, we were excited for new challenges and experiences. Bamboo and the other exotic birds add something special to the farm.
JAKE
HEAD ROOSTER
Besides filming & editing our videos, Jake enjoys observing our chickens, developing his woodworking skills & designing shirts & logos.
BECKY
MOTHER HEN
This leading lady for the farm. Becky does it all - the chores, the meals & homeschools our boys.
ELI
AGE 11
Always creating, Eli isn't afraid to get his hands dirty & build something alongside his dad. He's a big fan of flashlights & small electronics.
URIAH
AGE 8
Our little ball of energy & tomato thief (and green bean thief). He loves to run around the farm and hold his favorite chicken, Amber.
Isaiah
AGE 4
Isaiah is dad's mini-me. He loves to help with chores, fill the water buckets and hold the kittens or Bubbles the chicken.
Isabella
Age 2
We finally got our girl! Isabella is a beautiful blue-eyed baby taking in the farm and family. We love to watch her grow and change everyday.
